Meeting Description
“A classic text must never be entirely comprehensible. But those who are cultivated and who cultivate themselves must always want to learn more from it.” -Friedrich Schlegel, “On Incomprehensibility”
“I find myself longing for an earlier time when what I knew was contingent and always sheltered by what I didn’t know. Knowledge, in the days before instantaneous electronic recall, was full of potential energy. It was attended by a guesswork that fostered a different way of knowing, one that allowed for ranges rather than insisting on points.” Teju Cole, “The Blackness of the Panther”
Are you a writer apprehensive about AI? Tell me about it. This workshop will help you to identify and put into practice various craft strategies that large language models (LLMs; otherwise known as AI) such as ChatGPT cannot do. HI (human intelligence) writing includes a conscious awareness of aspects of writing such as the process from first to last draft, the “perplexity” (a linguistic term involving unpredictability of word choice) of one’s writing, randomness, humor, humility, patience, and using questions as an organizing principle for one’s craft (what will happen if this otherwise truthful character must lie to escape this situation?).
After a brief discussion of these principles, I will prompt participants to begin writing in a group setting. Once participants have had some time to put these ideas into practice, we’ll have a follow-up discussion about the writing they have done to finish the workshop.
