Marilyn Sassi presents "The Many Faces of American Folk Art" This presentation will begin with the 1720s first school of American portrait paintings for wealthy Dutch Patroons. There will be examples of 19th Century untrained craftsmen’s work as builders & painters of houses, signs, sleighs, carriages; who then, due to great demand, turned to painting portraits. American Folk Art grew out of a craft tradition and knowledge of working with paint plus the innate gift for design and color. The next half of the presentation will feature the many Folk Art objects created by these craftsmen turned artists. Examples: weather vanes, trade signs, cigar store Indians, sculptures and carousel horses as well as work-a-day household goods.

Speaker Bio: Marilyn Sassi is currently an adjunct professor at Schenectady County Community College and Hudson Valley Community College. She has also presented several series for U-Call at Union College. Marilyn is past curator of the Schenectady County Historical Society and the Fulton County Museum as well as the Van Alstyne Homestead Society. In addition to her teaching and museum experience, Marilyn has been involved in the field of antiques for many years.
About This Series: The Town of Bethlehem Historical Association (BHA) has been incorporated as a not-for-profit membership organization since 1965. Along with upkeep of collections and exhibits at the Cedar Hill Schoolhouse Museum at 1003 River Rd. Selkirk, the BHA is pleased to continue it's long tradition of presenting fall and spring series of talks by distinguished local speakers on a variety of topics designed to stimulate an appreciation of our historic heritage. We're delighted to have the opportunity to partner with the Bethlehem Public Library in our complementary roles of providing information and enhancing learning and enriching the cultural life of our community.
